UBCO Indigenous Celebration – June 2025

In June 2025, UBC Okanagan hosted its annual Indigenous Graduation Celebration to honour and recognize the achievements of all Indigenous graduates across faculties and programs. Among those celebrated were nine graduates of the Indigenous Language Fluency Degree programs—four Nsyilxcn and five Nlaka’pamux language learners—who completed their certificate, diploma, or degree pathways through UBCO and community partner institutions.

The celebration brought together graduates, families, Elders, faculty, and community members in a vibrant and respectful gathering. The event featured opening prayers, traditional songs, and words from Indigenous leaders and knowledge holders who emphasized the importance of language, culture, and education in reclaiming Indigenous identity and self-determination.

Guests from all the represented Nation were in attendance to show their deep respect and support for the graduates. Their presence affirmed the importance of Nation-to-Nation relationships and the collective pride in each student’s journey. Families travelled from across the Interior to celebrate these achievements, offering songs, gifts, and words of encouragement that reflected the strength and unity of their communities.

Each graduate was individually acknowledged for their accomplishments and presented with a blanket and cedar bough in recognition of their commitment, resilience, and contribution to Indigenous resurgence. The language graduates, in particular, were celebrated for their role in restoring, revitalizing, and carrying forward the voices of their Nations.

The celebration reflected UBCO’s commitment to Indigenous partnerships and the shared responsibility of supporting students on their educational journeys. It was a powerful moment of pride and unity, honouring not only academic success but the deeper cultural and community impact of Indigenous education.
