Presenters included David Walkem, Senior Manager of Strategic Partnerships at the Invasive Species Council of BC, who explored the impacts of invasive species on Indigenous practices, food security, and the environment. He also introduced a draft template for a “Comprehensive Invasive Species Management Plan” that integrates Indigenous values.
Dr. Shandin Pete, Assistant Professor at UBC, challenged conventional scientific approaches by presenting Indigenous knowledge systems and the importance of reciprocity and relationality in addressing environmental uncertainty.
Joe Gilchrist, a Traditional Fire Keeper from the Secwepemc Nation, discussed the revitalization of cultural burning practices, highlighting their potential in wildfire prevention, ecosystem restoration, and climate resilience. Together, these presentations fostered valuable discussions on blending traditional knowledge with modern environmental management strategies.
