Bachelors of Language Fluency Orientation – Interior Salishan Studies Program – June 16-18, 2025

From June 16–18, 2025, the Bachelors of Language Fluency (BNLF) program at UBC Okanagan hosted an in-person orientation for 35 incoming third-year students enrolled in the Interior Salishan Studies Language Fluency degree. The orientation was centered around community-building, cultural connection, and academic preparation, with a strong emphasis on relationship-building between the St’át’imc, Secwépemc, nɬákapmuxʷ, and Syilx Nations.

The event began on June 16 with student arrivals and an informal dinner at UBCO Student Housing. The following two days were filled with meaningful activities and sessions designed to support students as they embark on their language journeys!

Highlights from June 17 included a warm welcome by Dr. Jeannette Armstrong, an overview of the BNLF program by core faculty and staff, and a powerful alumni panel featuring voices from across the Interior Salishan language families. Students engaged in guided introductions and explored student services and campus supports with Indigenous Programs and Services.

On June 18, students received technical orientation and support, including introductions to Canvas, Keyman Keyboard, and Microsoft Teams. Additional sessions included a presentation from the Disability Resource Centre and a tour of ARCa and the UBCO Library, wrapping up with a final reflection activity.

The orientation offered students a valuable opportunity to connect with each other, meet instructors and alumni, and deepen their connection to the Nations represented within the program.
